1780s Antique American Chippendale Walnut & Pierced Feet Chest of Drawers
RARE AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE WALNUT CHEST OF DRAWERS Over Pierced Bracket Feet c. 1780-1800 A rare and certainly unusual chest, it is simple in construction and appeal, set apart by it’s highly interesting pierced bracket feet. The feet are complex, the outer edges an ogival form interrupted by a series of fillets; the last stretch of the foot is cyma in form, outlining an almost perfect inverted “S” before touching the ground. The interior piercing sets against this in a way that lends visual support to the arch of the foot. The top and sides of the case are each crafted of two solid walnut boards, the top edged by a thin projecting molding. The four graduated drawers retain lips carved of the solid, each with a single deeply chamfered poplar board set into grooves and nailed along the back edge with square iron nails; the brasses are replacements, though appropriate to the case. The interior displays an affinity for British tradition in craftsmanship, each drawer being divided out with a full dust board (also poplar) to protect the contents of the drawer below from dirt and dust as the drawer above is opened and closed. While it is not unusual to find dust boards in American case pieces, it is not typical and generally reflects an English taste among the patrons for the craftsman, as it is certainly a more time consuming and costly consideration for the craftsman. The back of the case is pure, retaining it’s original square iron nails and a nice deep brown oxidization throughout. The underside of the chest reveals interesting joinery, whereby the sides of the case continue down to the ground behind the bracket, making up a permanent interior block. This is a precious find that will certainly be a cherished piece by any passionate collector of American furnishings. Condition Report: Old finish but not original; some scarring, discolorations and water speckles to finish; top has an area of color loss. Replaced brasses; rear foot facings are replaced, front feet are original with scarring and triangular patch to one front foot facing; interior block of back proper left foot replaced. Runners replaced on some drawers; several drawer lips have minor patches.
