1950s Vintage Bust of Fantoni's Wife Sculpture
This is an odd little story. Starting in the early 90s, ,my family and I went on at least 3 trips to Italy a year. I would purchase about 20 pieces a trip. I made close friendships with Marcello Fantoni, Bruno Gambone (Guido’s son) , and a very close friendship with an expert Italian dealer and museum consultant who knew more than anyone i ever met about Italian ceramics. I bought, traded, and had inside connections for purchases from other great ceramists. This went on for about 20 years until the euro got out of hand. I got offered great pieces, on every trip. Now my Italian is awful, so I didn’t comprehend as much as I should have. Therefor, when I was offered this portraiture by Fantoni, I do not know whether he told me this was his wife or mistress. Either way, this is a fantastic piece with a glaze that changes tone and density as the sun hits it in different directions. I tried to capture this coloring in my photos and think I did a pretty good job of it. It is a valuable piece to any serious collector. It is 12" tall.
