1970s Vintage Suzanne Peters "Night Visitor" Pastel Oil on Canvas Painting
This is a gentle, expressive pastel tone vintage 1970s oil on canvas painting by Chicago artist Suzanne Peters (1943-2015). Peters was prolific in the late 1960s through the early 1980s, working mostly in large scale studies of women and figures, painting along a spectrum of realism and abstract expressionism, mostly in pastel or primary hues. This painting is entitled “Night Visitor” and depicts a sleeping woman gracefully prostrate in bed, with another woman in a dressing robe or nightgown sitting upright on the edge of the bed. Her hand is resting on the head of a regal orange cat, lain between the two figures. The painting is done in cool blues, light pinks, and marigold yellows. It provides a beautiful energy of the contrast between sleep and wakefulness, and the cat’s open eyes gaze at the viewer with an emotive serenity. The figures presented in Suzanne Peters’ work are complex, dynamic women with a story to tell. This painting is in great vintage condition with age-appropriate wear. It is framed, and there is some loosening to the joints of the frame consistent with age. The painting has an original hang tag from a gallery or show in which it was hung. It is signed on the front and signed/titled on the back of the piece. It measures 36 1/2 inches wide and 41 1/2 inches long.
