RARE 1st Edition Full Color Lithographic Prints Pageantry of American Birds: Tropical American Birds Jean-Theodore Descourtilz, French naturalist, illustrator and painter (1796-1855) Published by Holt Rinehart Winston (1960) Printed in Netherlands, L. van Leer & Co. Approximate size: 17.25” x 11.25”. Condition: All plates are in excellent condition with deep, rich colors on light cream colored vellum stock. Ready for framing. Plates have been removed from the book cover which was in poor condition. Each plate shows only one kind of bird, depicted against its natural surroundings of beautiful flowers, fruits, and butterflies, in addition to the foliage. This ecological view distinguishes Jean Theodore Descourtilz from other naturalists of this period. Thanks to the fine printing craftsmanship of Messrs. L. van Leer & Co N.V. in Amsterdam, 30 of these rich, full-color offset lithographs are included in this magnificent set. The quality of the printing is spectacular. Individually, these color plates regularly sell for $40 – $70 each, depending on condition. A complete set is rare. This collection also includes another 30+ black and white prints of tropical birds which are beautiful in their own right. All of these plates are in excellent condition with slight toning to paper commensurate with age.
