A Certain Kind of Love - Original Painting by Carolyn Reed Barritt
Physical mark making, stream of consciousness, flow. I create my artworks with a combination of drawing and painting on both paper and canvas, making marks and shapes with acrylic paint and ink, graphite, dry pigment, oil pastel, oil stick, and spray paint. Line is foremost in my approach, and I balance that mark making with color, shape, space and abstraction. I draw and redraw. I add and obliterate with paint, erasure and concealment. Some marks are obliterated, some are revealed, and some are drawn last as the top-most layer. I use a wide variety of tools to apply marks and color: ordinary brushes, but also putty knives, nib pens, graphite crayons, rags pencils, sticks and my fingers and hands. This artwork was created with a combination of acrylic ink and gesso. It has a red underpainting which I exposed by scratching through the topmost layers of color. It is on a back-stapled stretched canvas (1.5 inch profile), and has a hanging wire.
