Axel Einar Hjorth (1888-1959) was a leading Swedish designer of the first half of the twentieth century. Hjorth was instrumental in introducing Swedish decorative arts to America, exhibiting his works together with those of Carl Hˆrvik and Carl Malmsten at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, 1927. Between 1926-1938, Hjorth worked as chief designer and architect for the Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) which was one of the most important makers of modern furniture in Sweden. NK commissioned many of Sweden‚ most celebrated architects to create furniture. As noted by C. Bjˆrk, T. Ekstrˆm & O. Ericson, Axel Einar Hjorth: Mˆbelarkiteckt, Stockholm, 2009, p. 145, “His pieces of furniture for the Nordiska Kompanient were characterized by craftsmanship of high quality and advanced combinations of material. The furniture was manufactured for a financially strong clientele with modern demands…” . Offered by H.M. Luther
