Provenance: Mithoff Family, Pennsylvania and Ohio; M. Henck, Cincinnati, Ohio; Eleanor Mithoff Bishop, Princeton, New Jersey; Bernard & S. Dean Levy, Inc., New York; Private Florida Collection. A family history compiled by Eleanor Mithoff Bishop, from whom this lowboy was originally purchased is as follows:“Hector August Mithoff was born February 9, 1785 in London, England. Sometime after his birth he and his family returned to Hanover, Germany, their ancestral home. After his fathers death in 1795, Queen Charlotte, wife of George III, had Mithoff brought to England to be educated. While there he lived at the palace. Later, he studied law in Gottingen, Germany where he married Ernestine Louise Reinhardt (born March 25, 1782) daughter of Kommers Reinhardt. Mithoff practiced law in Hanover. In 1809 with his wife, one daughter and several sons they came to America. They spent several years in Philadelphia where, it is believed , they bought household goods and furniture – some rather old fashioned pieces.”
