An Inlaid Chest of Drawers by Giuseppe Maggiolini
This finely executed neoclassical commode has a rectangular overhanging top, centrally inlaid with a mythological couple in costume, all within quarter veneered panels of kingwood within a trailing vine border. The frieze drawer is inlaid with portrait medallions, flower filled urns and garland swags, above two drawers sensa traversa centered with the reverse figural medallion within a trailing vine border. Each of the lower two drawers is fitted with round bronze handles. The sides of the commode are similarly inlaid with figural medallions, while the corner stiles are inlaid with neoclassical vase motifs, which continue on the tapering square legs.
An almost identical Milanese marquetry chest-of-drawers is part of the Savoia collection at the Palazzina di Caccia at Stupinigi, near Turin (see N. Gabrielli, Museo dell‚ôArredamento, Stupinigi, Turin, 1988, fig. 95). Offered by LAntiquaire & The Connoisseur, Inc.
