Angelo Ippolito Woman in Abstract Circa 1965
An abstract expressionist figural oil showing a view of a nude woman seated rendered in ochre-yellow and deep green seated in the artist’s studio. Inscribed verso, ‘Ippollitto’, (American, 1922-2002) titled ‘Nude’; additionally inscribed ‘Bronson’ and painted circa 1965. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. Active in the New York Abstract Expressionist movement, Angelo Ippolito was born in St. Arsenio, Italy and moved America at a young age. He first studied at the Ozenfan School of Fine Arts in New York and, subsequently, with John Ferren at the Brooklyn Museum Art School. The receipt of a Fulbright Scholarship enabled Ippolito to attend the Meschini Institute in Rome and, subsequently, to study in Florence. Ippolito exhibited internationally with success, including at the Whitney Museum (“Young America”, 1957), the Sao Paulo Biennial (Brazil, 1961), at New York’s Museum of Modern Art and the Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam (1966). Additionally, Ippolito exhibited in London, Rome’s Modern Art Museum, Caulfield Gallery, UC at Berkeley, Cleveland Art Institute, and Carnegie Institute (1956-1959). A retrospective of his work was held in 1975 at the University Art Gallery of the State University of New York Binghamton. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum; the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute in Utica, New York; the Phillips Gallery, Washington, DC; Norfolk, Virginia’s Museum of Arts and Sciences as well as the Milwaukee Museum (Wisconsin). Throughout his career as a painter, Ippolito also continued to teach including at the Cooper Union in New York, at Yale University and at the University of California. Ippolito’s work is held in the permanent collections of numerous museums and the artist is well listed in relevant reference works including Who Was Who in American Art and Benezit. Reference: E.
