Antique English Jacobean Carved Oak Table Circa 1860
This handsome antique English oak side table circa 1860 is Jacobean in style with its combination of both carving and turning construction techniques. Designed to be seen from all directions (the reverse top and apron are also finished) this English side table is quite versatile. The front of the table is the most decorative as it features a pair of drawers each embellished with a series of vertical fluting and a pair of brass knobs. The same pattern of fluting is also visible on the left and right apron beneath the table top giving it a more dramatic appearance than a simple timber board. All four legs have been turned on a lathe and possess a bold profile with a series of ring turnings that frame a baluster form. Both the top and base of each leg have a block form ending that frames the apron at the top while enabling the legs to be joined by a horizontal stretcher. Due to tables such as this being frequently moved about an interior the need for strength and stability was paramount and having a lower stretcher to balance the upper section with the drawers was the answer. The beautiful luster of the polished patina is lovely and adds to the presence of this table.
