Antique French Louis XVI Style Carved Walnut Daybed
This is a stunning Antique French Louis XVI style daybed. This bed was purchased at auction in New York City by my Father in the mid 1950’s when he was hired at the Men’s style editor at GQ Magazine. It has moved from that Manhattan Mad Men era studio in Midtown to San Francisco where it has served as a nursery daybed, guest seating and slumber party staple. This rare and highly functional piece is comprised of a Walnut wood straight carved frame, featuring Finials and Rosettes set in blocks over fluted tapered legs. The side panels and base have been re-upholstered in a blue & white Toile de Jouy fabric and finished with custom Passmenterie trim. “Toile de Jouy”* is a type of decorating pattern consisting of a white or off-white background on which a repeated pattern depicting a fairly complex scene, generally of a pastoral theme such as a couple having a picnic by a lake or an arrangement of flowers. The pattern portion consists of a single color, in this case blue. The seat cushion is very solid and upholstered in a grey flannel with a custom white Matelasse slipcover that zips on and off for cleaning. The piece is disassembled for transport and assembles easily with screws (provided). Pieces include 2 side panels, 2 side rails, base and cushion. * Toiles were originally produced in Ireland in the mid-18th Century and quickly became popular in Britain and France.3 The term, Toile de Jouy, originated in France in the late 18th century. In the French language, the phrase literally means “cloth from Jouy-en-Josas”, a town in the south-west suburbs of Paris.
