“Technology over technique produces emotionless design” – Daniel Mall
“The life of a designer is a life of fight: fight against the ugliness” – Massimo Vagnelli
Based out of Boulder, Colorado, designer-maker Alexander Giray began building hand crafted furniture in 2016 following his desire to channel his creativity through craftsmanship. Stepping back from an extensive career as a professional rock climbing guide and utilizing entirely self-taught skills, he created Alexander Giray Designs in 2017. The goal being to explore the relationship between us and objects that have the ability to captivate our senses. Drawing inspiration from his architectural schooling and extensive time spent in the great outdoors, these influences are apparent in each piece.
His current collection is a reflection on Danish modernism with a focus on luxury and functionality for small spaces, while exploring the contrast between stainless steel and natural wood. The objective is to create bold and eye-catching designs that will become statement pieces.
He made his debut with that collection at the 2019 Architectural Digest Design Show and will be showing at ICFF NYC for the first time this year.
Moving forward, Alexander plans on exploring new materials and manufacturing methods through collaborations and experimentation to further his understanding of design.
