Downtown Lighting

While often overlooked, designer lighting is one of the most important elements in setting the tone and mood of a room. It is important to consider all aspects of a space before deciding what type of lighting to incorporate. Illuminate your next design project with over 10,000 designer lighting products to choose from on Dering Hall.

Don’t get stuck in the dark

Whether you’re working on one room or the entire house, you’re probably going to be looking into different types of designer lighting. Not all rooms are created equally, and not every type of lighting is going to work in every room. A chandelier may look glamorous in your entryway but intrusive in your kitchen. A pendant light may sound great for your bedroom, but how luminous will it be for nighttime reading? With so many designer lighting options available, you need to determine the best fit for every space in your house.

The first step in the process of choosing the perfect designer lighting for your next design project is to decide what type of light is right. There are eight general categories of designer lighting: chandeliers, table lighting, wall lighting, pendants, floor lamps, and flush mounts. There are also lighting enhancements like lampshades and accessories and light switches and plates. Consider the purpose of the light you are adding - is it utilitarian or a statement piece? Then think through the different styles and types of each category. What follows is a brief guide to get you started.

Chandeliers

Chandeliers are overhanging designer lighting with multiple bulbs that collectively create a distinct, illuminating, statement piece. These pieces are typically more elegant and expensive than other lighting fixtures, making them more likely to be used in a prominent room or entryway.

Floor and Table Lighting

Table lighting is designer lighting that can be placed on a table or hard surface. A table lamp is a great way to brighten up a room without having to perform an electrical installation. A floor lamp is similar, but can be placed directly on the floor.

Wall Lighting

A wall sconce is a wall mounted designer light fixture, typically close to eye level, that can add accent or primary lighting to any room. Here are some examples of this type of designer lighting:

Pendant Lighting

A pendant light is an overhanging fixture suspended by a metal rod, cord or chain. Pendants are extremely popular as they can come in an assortment of styles and sizes, and can help illuminate a specific area such as a kitchen island or study room.

Flush Mounts

Flush mounts are named for the way they attach directly, or “flush to,” the ceiling. They are a more subtle type of designer lighting that come in a variety of styles and shapes. Here is a sample of this type of designer lighting:
