Burl Walnut Sheraton Style Double Pedestal Dining Table, Two Leaves, Hand Made in England. This table showcases the extraordinary beauty of walnut when it has developed the distinctive pattern that is known as “burl”. The top of the table has been sheathed with matching panels of burl walnut that are set down in a pattern known as “book matched”. Please enlarge and zoom on the photographs as the movement of the grain across the expanse of the table surface is quite enchanting. “Burl walnut” results from the random growth occuring on a walnut tree that is actually a mutation. “Burl” growths may appear aboveground along the side of a tree trunk and may also be found amongst the roots of a tree where its presence is not revealed unless the tree is cut down or is felled during a storm. Thomas Sheraton designed the table originally with its lovely graceful pair of pedestals that support the top. Each pedestal has a central column standing on three legs which curve and splay outward away from the column before terminating in a square toe brass caster on wheels. The reason for the brass caster was two fold as the cap protected the end of the leg from the errant kick of a shoe while the sheen of the polished brass reflected the light from a blazing fire and lit candles in the dining room in order to illuminate the end of each leg when being seated. The small wheel on the underside of each caster also allowed the table to be easily moved when needed. The table also has two leaves (each 20" wide) that may be entirely removed from the table making it 80" wide. If one leaf is chosen then the table is 100" long and if both leaves are employed then the table is fully extended to 120" in length. Please notice that the design of the table uses no apron on the underside of the top that always gets in the way when dining.
