Impossibly thin Danish oiled oak combines with handwoven cane and luxurious aniline leather in the Colonial Chair and Footstool (1949) Ole Wanschers most famous and enduring design. Defying gravity through masterful construction, with a compelling material contrast, its name honors the Danish designers fascination with English furnishings from the 1700s. A slightly more conservative strand of Danish modern than we see from masters like Finn Juhl and Hans Wegner, Wanschers work reflects his scholarly nature: He served as professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture (his alma mater) from 1955 to 1973. Designed in 1949, the Colonial wasnt put into production until the mid-1950s, when Wanscher stumbled on a collaboration with PJ Furniture through Mobilia magazine editor, Gunnar Bratvold. (Carl Hansen & Son acquired the right to produce the Colonial Chair and Footstool in 2012.) Wanscher gained a good deal of notoriety in Denmark in the 50s and 60s. In 1958, the Danish newspaper Politiken declared, Owning a Wanscher chair is an adventure every day, and will be so even several hundred years from now, for this is how long it lasts. Made in Denmark.
