Californians have a few go-to's when it comes to mini getaways and a small town tucked alongside the San Jacinto mountains is one of them. It’s Palm Springs, the one-time Old-Hollywood hangout that’s resurfaced as the ultimate weekend hideaway in recent years. And it’s gotten a wee bit more glamorous since the newly minted Avalon Hotel has staked claim just off Palm Canyon Drive.
Formerly known as the Viceroy Palm Springs, the Avalon has added a few fresh new features to make a weekend in the desert one magical experience.
Arrive and walk through a tree shaded walkway where waterfalls flow and koi fish play in ponds to your left and right. Then it’s right through the oversized canary yellow doors and signature sangria cocktails to kick off your stay. The hotel still boasts the original panache that it opened with, a decadent deco-inspired mix of black, yellow and white, compliments of Kelly Wearstler. However, while some things have stayed the same, others have definitely changed.
The hotel restaurant, Citron, has changed into a cozy, new school boho lounge space peppered with rattan peacock chairs, retro bulb lighting, and a fresh take on Mid-century.
Stay for a few and sip a cocktail or grab a bite at the property’s neighboring (and new) eatery, ChiChi, headed up by Chef Tara Lazar. She’s infused a bit of childhood and a lot of flavor into each dish that shows up on the menu. From the Latin fruit cart, a mix of melon, mango, and more served with chile salt, to the crazy delicious beef picadillo empanadas and the pork belly and pineapple skewers, the fare transcends you.
Along with those tasty bites is a space that’s just as yummy, where warm lighting sets the tone for a fun poolside dinner or dine during the day and find joy in the little things, gold toned flatware, amber drinkware, cozy seating, and tie-dyed napkins and table runners.
With a fully belly and a thirty minute wait (you know the rule), you can take a dip in one of the three pools, which are open all night long. Skip off to the jacuzzi that’s laced with bougainvillea or spend the afternoon at Estrella Spa. Yes, this has been updated too. The spa has kept the same name, but now offers a long list of organic treatments designed to make you better on the inside and out. We vote for the Alchemist Facial and an outdoor massage. You can get your shopping fix here too as they sell Kelly Wearstler knick knacks, pretty stone earrings and gold necklaces galore.
There’s no shortage of good times at this updated spot. From sleeping (just look at that cozy bed) to poolside lounging with a cocktail (the Paloma is a must-try) or grabbing a property bicycle and doing a little desert exploring, you can’t go wrong. The Avalon offers the glam and the relaxation that’s making Palm Springs the hottest spot, literally and figuratively, in Southern California right now.
