When a design-savvy homeowner set eyes on this perfectly situated Malibu beach house, it was love at first sight.
This love story first began 20 years ago, when interior designer Patti Skouras introduced a longtime client to a stunning beachfront home that she had worked on in Malibu. "My client had a major emotional response to the house," says Skouras. "She never forgot about it."
Having played host to a number of renters over the previous years, the residence was showing serious signs of wear. So after the clients purchased the home Skouras spent a year and a half working with the original architect, Marc Appleton, to get the place back to its former glory—and then some.
While the home had first been designed to capture a rustic Greek island essence, the new homeowners wanted a more traditional, sophisticated European country house feel. Skouras filled the home with richly finished antiques such as the custom lapis lazuli-topped table in the dining room.
The European atmosphere doesn't end when you walk outside. In the courtyard and on the back terrace, citrus trees and bright tropical blooms further contribute to the home's exotic island feel.
Inside and out, Santa Barbara sandstone columns and limestone flooring provide texture and warmth. Skouras was able to restore many of the beautiful hand-worked built-ins throughout the home by making simple adjustments.
