Featured Room: Lively Look by Summer Thornton

Sometimes a ‘room’ happens to be a breakfast nook, living room, and kitchen all in one – such is the life of the city dweller. Tackling these types of spaces can always be a challenge, and when I do them I tend to lean towards a lot of neutrals so that they space doesn’t overwhelm. But, in this small Chicago apartment, designer Summer Thornton takes a bold approach with patterns and colors that feel light and fresh.

The breakfast nook is absolutely my favorite part in the home. I have a thing for shades of peach and lilac together, and that piping on the nook bench is so on point.

At some point in my life – when I have time and patience and money – I will own a piece of furniture covered in Quadrille fabric. Preferably in the exact pattern – Arbre de Matisse – that was used here in the roman shades. Although it would be pretty hard to pick a favorite out of their line.

Again, more orange + lilac love in that settee. Also, the choice to push the seating up against the kitchen island is one of my new favorite layout strategies for small space living. Unless you really love them, eliminating the whole uncomfortable stools-at-the-counter thing saves a ton of space.

The oversized pendants are an interesting choice, but I actually think they work. I’m guessing they provide a lot of extra light for the space.

Another amazing trick if you can afford it is to keep the appliances a seamless with the rest of the open kitchen as possible, like making the refrigerating blend with the cabinetry and tucking the microwave under the counter (instead of on it or above). I love the Blue Star range being a crown jewel here though – that blue matches the window treatments perfectly, and the hood is stunning too.

Sidenote – I can’t wait to remodel our kitchen. I will so be looking for a range like this that will stand out and be a beautiful focal point.

Benches are a small space dweller’s best friend and I love this cozy moment in front of the fireplace (isn’t that paint color gorgeous?). And I never say no to a little beach moment, so that mirror is definitely working for me too.
