Architect John B. Murray of John B. Murray Architect LLC is known for his deep understanding of classical architecture, as well as his ability to adapt its principles to the modern day. In his new book, Contemporary Classical Architecture (The Monacelli Press), he shares 15 projects, ranging from Manhattan apartments to sprawling country houses, often created in collaboration with top interior designers including Bunny Williams, Brian J. McCarthy, and Stephen Sills.
For this 1840s house on a 120-acre farm in Hyde Park, New York, Murray's clients were passionate about maintaining the historic Greek Revival character of the house, while updating it to create an open, flexible space for family and visiting friends. Murray removed a 1950s addition, then expanded the main house by more than a third with three flat-roof additions. A new kitchen and breakfast room on the east side is suffused with morning light. The new family room on the west side, used for reading, watching TV, or playing a game of chess, captures afternoon light. The third addition, a guest bedroom extension, adjoins a large terrace that overlooks a pond. Working with designer Sam Blount and the owners' outstanding collection of American antiques and English decorative arts, the architect has crafted a weekend home that is redolent of history but totally contemporary and welcoming.299
