This month, clé tile launches its first brick-and-mortar studio, a 12,000-square-foot headquarters and showroom in San Rafael, California. Transforming a former warehouse into an expansive tile gallery, clé will also be creating an on-site tile guild to serve as both an R&D lab for the company and a place for up-and-coming artists to learn the craft of tile making.
Clé is known for sourcing heirloom-quality tiles from around the globe, including Moroccan Zellige, raku-fired tiles from Vietnam, and Italian terracotta and Carrara stone. Founded six years ago by artist and designer Deborah Osburn, clé has become known for embracing rare, unique styles of tile and celebrating the craft behind the art form. Their new on-site tile guild will serve as a kind of tech incubator for craftspeople, teaching emerging tilemakers about their art form as well as the business of the industry.292
