Designer to the Rescue: Elissa Cullman

Designer Elissa Cullman of Cullman & Kravis, Inc. brings new energy to the formal living room of a storied country house.

The custom sofa is upholstered in a Bergamo fabric, the chaise by Home Nature is covered in a Donghia fabric, and the Mecox Gardens armchair is in a Holly Hunt fabric; the vintage side tables are by Paul Frankl.

In her latest book, From Classic to Contemporary: Decorating with Cullman & Kravis (Monacelli Press), Elissa Cullman shares 13 projects that blend high style with comfort and ease. Here she shares the challenge of renovating the living room of a country house with an illustrious pedigree:

The custom carpet is by Beauvais, and the artworks are by Darren Almond.

The challenge of this project was to update the 45-foot-long, classically detailed living room of an iconic Delano & Aldrich 1927 stone house in Briarcliff Manor, NY. The young family who purchased the property, formerly owned by Brooke Astor, wanted a casual space that they would really use.

The light fixture, one of a pair, is by Craig Van Den Brulle; and the metal console table is by Collier Webb.

Our solution was to re-imagine the vast room as three overlapping but distinct areas: at one end we included a television with an L-shaped sofa, at the other we created a more formal seating area with a chaise, overlooking the grounds. In between, we installed a new pool table and an Art Deco-inspired billiards light overhead. To unite the areas, instead of three rugs, we specified a newly woven, loose loop Berber carpet that runs the length of the room.
