ELLE DECOR’s second annual Modern Life Concept House pairs top designers with leading home and lifestyle brands to create dazzling spaces in a Manhattan residence. The result — published nationally in ELLE DECOR, featured online and in social media, and experienced live through events and tours—is a powerful blueprint to state-of-the-art design that is as livable as it is stylish. Below are the rooms designed by DH Designers Antony Todd and Sherrill Canet.

Situated between the dining room and the outdoor terrace, the timeless Great Room is sophisticated, awash with texture, and punctuated with unexpected accents. The space was created for “a contemporary, fun-loving couple and their kids,” according to Antony Todd, who worked with Restoration Hardware furnishings.

“My design concept was to follow their easy and comfortable approach—so much of it is simply a stylish fit,” he says. “We added some large works of art and various objects to lend some life to their already beautiful collection.” Todd’s adept color mix of a neutral palette played off against spring greens and blues and adds to the room’s magical atmosphere.

Urban, organic glamour defines this heart-of-the-home space that easily converts from a family meal hub to a gourmet dinner party venue. Sherrill Canet chose stained wood, wool, leather, and polished-chrome furnishings from BoConcept for the dining area, to visually integrate it with the adjacent kitchen.

“Between the sofa, dining chairs, barstools and bench, there is seating for twelve,” Canet says. “The party starts here.” Metallic faux-bois Phillip Jeffries Ltd. wallcovering adds to the design’s organic aura, and a bold Roll & Hill light fixture, available at adds to the room’s glamour quotient.

“It was fun to reinterpret different styles of furnishings, incorporating a modern edge. I am now rethinking my Georgian Colonial!” adds Canet. She also adds “The kitchen and the room next to the kitchen is always the ‘heart of the house.’ My design concept began with the idea that the dining area would be a place to linger and lounge. With the addition of a comfortable sofa as part of the dining area as well as a lounge chair and cocktail table, the area becomes a multi-purpose destination where the chef is embraced.”

Featured in the kitchen and bathrooms, Caesarstone quartz countertops offer versatile appeal and easy maintenance in colors and textures that complement contemporary life. “I used the shitake color in the kitchen. It’s very warm and earthy, and the contrast with the lacquer cabinetry is beautiful,” says designer Sherrill Canet.

Working with one of nature’s most abundant minerals, Caesarstone is a leader in sustainable business practices, from recycling 97 percent of the water used in manufacturing to collecting dust from shipping, handling, production, and processing of the product. The Solna faucet by Brizo, inspired by contemporary Scandinavian furniture, is the perfect finishing touch to this space. “It has a wonderful sculptural shape. You just touch the faucet, and it turns on and off,” add Canet. A new “hidden” pull-down spray wand adds functionality, yet allows Solna to maintain its sleek form.
