In the Mix with Bruce Fox

Bruce Fox, co-founder of the Boston and Chicago-based interior design firm Wells & Fox, is “always attracted to things that are strong architecturally,” be they buildings, interiors, or furnishings. For him, and the rest of his 12-person design studio, it’s not just “does the couch match the drapes, but also does the couch fit the architecture? We don’t just decorate. We take a more holistic approach and think about the building itself.” This is due in part to his business partner’s background—Heather Wells is an architect in addition to an interior designer—as well as his own experience, and fluency, with a wide array of architectural typologies. Currently on his firm’s docket of projects: grand, traditional houses with contemporary interiors in New England; a warm and woodsy former-boy-scout-camp-turned-family-retreat in the Midwest; and Chicago apartments filled with clean and modern furniture and fabrics. Whether Fox is furnishing a project, designing items for his forthcoming furniture collection (watch for it in spring 2013), or simply indulging in some fantasy online shopping on Dering Hall, he favors pieces with strong lines, historical references, and, often, a vintage look. As he puts it—and as his picks below attest—“it’s all about the mix.”
