After a career spent crafting calming, personalized interiors, designer Carolyn Rebuffel Flannery of Workroom C recently took on a new design project — her own home. The property in San Rafael, California, is smaller than her former house, and the traditional floor plan could make the 1,500-square-foot space seem even more compact it actually was. “Because the space is small, the goal was to use colors that would flow from room to room and make the entire house feel cohesive and happy,” says Flannery.
Color ends up defining the interiors. Deep shades of blue thread throughout the living room and kitchen, appearing mutedly in an abstract painting in the dining room, and yellows wash over the bedroom, enhanced by natural lighting.
“As a designer, it’s always so much fun to get to work on my own home,” she says. Read on for our tour of the designer’s whimsical Marin County home.183
