On scenic Mercer Island outside Seattle, designer LeeAnn Baker of LeeAnn Baker Interiors performed a full-scale renovation for a Bellevue-based couple, who wanted to downsize their lives in a second home once their children moved out for good. Lisa Cheung, the house’s co-owner, found Baker’s profile online. She was attracted to Baker’s style, which the designer describes as ”Northwest Elegance” — meaning “unpretentious and relaxed while still luxurious, and always trying to encompass the surrounding views and palette of the Northwest.” Ironically, Baker was already familiar with the house, as she had grown up on the island and used to babysit for its previous owners.
Since the home featured wide waterfront views to the west, it made sense to expand the windows and open up the entire first floor so that more rooms could look out toward the ocean. She enlisted the help of Stillwell Hanson Architects and Joseph McKinstry Construction Company to complete a gut renovation, and then revamped the overall style with elegant furnishings and a touch of big city glamour. “Lisa has fabulous taste, and she wanted her home to be luxurious like a New York townhouse, but still have finishes that would not have her guests feeling like they couldn’t be at home there,” says Baker.
