When architect Barbara Bestor set out to design a home for a family of four in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, there was no question that her passion for modernism would come into play. See Bestor's unique approach, which included outfitting the property with inspired furniture and accessories from Design Within Reach.
In considering the home's design, Bestor drew inspiration from the creativity and stunning architecture the Silver Lake area is known for. Pops of color, a garden view, and modern furniture complete the look. There was also another factor she considered: the home's unique identity, described in its name, "The House Over a Wall." A concrete wall adds a sense of modernism and privacy, along with a much-needed second floor for the family.
Bestor designed a small home office, including a chalkboard wall for whenever creativity strikes, which is complemented by statement furniture and accessories.
Natural light pours into the spacious kitchen, making it an inviting space for the family to prepare and enjoy meals together. Bestor, the author of Bohemian Modern: Living in Silver Lake, incorporated special details like a four-shelf wine cabinet under the kitchen island as well as counter stools, made of sustainably sourced wood, for casual dining.
The East Coast native's creativity is evident in her use of large sliding glass doors to enable indoor-outdoor living. It was essential to design a space that allowed the family to enjoy the beauty of Los Angeles on a day-to-day basis.
Bestor, who's run her firm since 1995, has one goal for her architecture practice: to "design atmospheres." That's just what she did for the outdoor area, which is all about embracing nature. Minimalist furniture in fresh white complements the garden, which has a laid-back feel.
An abundance of greenery surrounds an intimate pool area for the family to unwind on hot days. A white bar table and stools add to the casual, inviting atmosphere.
