Designed by David Andreozzi of
Andreozzi Architects with interiors by Meryl Santopietro, this elegant teahouse in Bristol, Rhode Island, is part of a larger compound that includes a guest suite and a greenhouse and overlooks Narragansett Bay. The structures feature details typical of a New England coastal home mixed with Asian influences that were inspired by the owners' numerous travels in the region. 91

The teahouse is at the center between a guesthouse on the right and a greenhouse on the left. The two end structures have similar forms but completely different looks—the guesthouse is solid with a traditional New England Shingle style design while the glazed curtain walls of the greenhouse provide a light and airy connection to the endless ocean views. At the center, the teahouse connects the two spaces both visually and phystically, particuarly in the Asian-inspired roof with shingle detail. The end result is three distinct spaces that feel harmonious and unified.

The entire compound, including the gardens and landscaping, which was overseen by Katherine Field & Associates and Sophath Toun, was designed as one to create a cohesive feel among all parts of the property. One of the biggest challenges of the project was the proximity to the water—the site is only 50 feet from the bay. Andreozzi had to ensure that the building complied with local, state and federal regulations while fulfilling the client's desired aesthetic.

The teahouse features custom-made wormy cypress barn doors that allow the space to be easily opened or closed to the outdoors. When opened, the house has unobstructed views to the east and west and ocean breezes can pass through. When closed, the space is more intimate and private, ideal for entertaining, yoga or an afternoon tea at the sunken table.

The architecture is seamlessly integrated with the scenic location. Details throughout the home showcase the Asian influences and the owners’ collection of treasures acquired during their travels abroad.
