Behind the Design

Manhattan from the Top

Ever since the opening of the Dakota in 1884, Manhattan's storied apartment buildings have inspired envy with their sprawling layouts, staggering views, and plentiful amenities. Now 15 of the best are celebrated in Life at the Top: New York's Most Exceptional Apartment Buildings (Vendome Press). The detailed text by Kirk Henckels and Anne Walker showcases the developers and architects who created these luxurious residences and their prominent inhabitants, who included Brooke Astor, Lauren Bacall, CZ Guest, and Elizabeth Arden, as well as a slew of the city's top social families, industrialists, and financiers.

Stern's 15 Central West and Rafael Vinoly's 432 Park Avenue, the tallest residential tower in the Western Hemisphere, both of which are featured in this stunning book.
