Shopping with Francine Gardiner from Intérieurs

Not many people can say they helped launch major design trends, but designer Francine Gardner is an exception. Since opening her New York City showroom, Intérieurs, in 1997, Gardner has given people their first glimpse of objects and styles that would soon take off in a big way: French furniture with original peeling paint in the mid ’90s; teak freeform wood used as consoles and tables in the late ’90s; and pieces that incorporate industrial gears and parts starting in 2002. “It’s not conscious, it just happens,” she says of her bellwether ways. “Now I’m thinking about the next one… let’s see what hits me next!”
