Savoir Beds has quite a distinguished history and namesake. Can you start off by telling us a little about the founding of the brand?
Our story begins in 1889 when the famous impresario Richard D’Oyly Carte opened The Savoy Hotel in London. Ensuring no comfort would be spared, in 1905 he commissioned the prestigious upholsterer James Edwards Ltd to create a bed that met the hotel’s exacting standards of excellence. The resulting luxurious Savoy bed, now known as the
Savoir No.2 bed, remains almost as legendary as The Savoy itself and is still covered with the trademark trellis ticking designed by Lady D’Oyly herself.

Savoir beds are known for their supreme craftsmanship. How much have the techniques and processes changed from the
first beds made to those being built today?
Production techniques adopted in the early years of the
company are still very much used today, with each bed bench-made by hand using
the finest natural fillings such as Mongolian cashmere wool and curled
blond horse tail hair from Latin American horses along with pure cotton.
The No.2 bed remains almost identical to the original bed made for The Savoy in

Can you describe some of the key steps involved in making the beds and what makes unique from other beds?
It can take up to 120 hours to create one bed because each
is hand-crafted to a client’s precise specifications. A Savoir bed can be made to any size or
shape, stand-alone or sport a bespoke headboard, be beautifully upholstered or
made to fit into an existing frame. For us, it’s an incredible honor to design
and create something that we know will be valued and enjoyed every day of a
person’s life, and each bed is signed by the craftsman after completion. We view the creation of a Savoir bed as a true partnership – a one-of-a-kind collaboration between Savoir and each individual client.

Beds are obviously a very personal item, perhaps more so than any other furnishing in
the home. Can you describe what it feels like to lay on a Savoir Bed?
At Savoir, we believe everyone should “sleep beautifully.” We take the art of fine bed-making to undreamed levels of comfort and
luxury, producing beds so sumptuous that customers compare sleeping on their
Savoir to floating in a cloud. As the bed is a very personal item, we take
great care in assisting clients with choosing the right model and firmness,
ensuring that all personal requirements are met. Creating a truly
comfortable bed that lasts for many, many years requires skilled
craftsmen and the very best materials. As in creating any quality piece
of furniture, there are simply no shortcuts. The bed is the place in
our home where we spend most of our time, so investing a bit of time, effort,
and yes, money, to find the bed that will give you that cloud-like experience,
night after night for years to come – well, its almost a crime not to.

A British institution more than 100 years, what made you expand to the United States, specifically New York?
Over the years, Savoir has attracted discerning clients from
around the world, including the United States, many of them New Yorkers.
It was time we brought the brand stateside so
more Americans could get the opportunity
to experience a Savoir bed firsthand. Even though
the luxury bed market is fairly new in the U.S., Americans have
embraced it, and I feel in the coming years there will be an even stronger
focus on the bedroom and our sleeping environment. The bedroom is our most
sacred place in the home and the bed our most intimate piece of furniture. A truly comfortable bed can change your life.

Savoir’s client list is absolutely astonishing. From Sir Winston Churchill to John Wayne, the list of rich and famous who have slept on
a Savoir Bed is endless. Who would you most like to make a bed for today?
Our clients are still as diverse as they have always been
but of course now include Wall Street and Silicon Valley pioneers, pop
stars and athletes, as well as Hollywood legends. It has been very
encouraging to see many of the top American interior designers
specifying beds not only for their clients, but also for
themselves. It would be great to make a Savoir bed for Mark Zuckerberg to
help foster his next great idea and innovation. Or perhaps David Letterman
– he’s certainly earned it. Ultimately though, we’d love to create a
Savoir bed especially for Hillary Clinton, and maybe even have it delivered
right to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue!
