There's nothing like getting a glimpse into the process behind furniture design. In this latest Studio Visit feature, Coryne Lovick shares about designing her beautiful Tubular Dining Table, which is a clever mix of refined and industrial elements.
Q: What inspired you to design the Tubular Dining Table?
A: I have always been interested in the contrast and juxtaposition between refined and industrial materials. When you think about tubular pipes, they are usually underground and hidden from sight, so the idea of bringing it to the surface and combining it with a highly polished material like wood inspired me. I would consider steel a cold material, and wood a warm one, so bringing them together creates a nice balance. If scaled properly, the contrast between these two materials can create a perfect unity that is pleasing to the eye.
Q: Did you see a void in the marketplace, or did you design it for a particular project and then realize it had broader appeal?
A: I was only designing it as an additional piece to my collection. I wanted to make a dining table that was compatible with my dining chairs, which were already a part of the line. I needed a table that was elegant, temporary, mid-century and timeless.
Q: What is your favorite feature or detail of the item?
A: My favorite part of the table is the edge detail of the wood top. It has a linear micro-edge that bevels underneath.
Q: Ideally, how and where would you like to see the table used?
A: It is great in a dining room, especially when paired with the dining chairs from my collection. Though, it works with most chairs because the table is so simple, and there is so much flexibility with the finishes that it can really be paired to fit with any style chair ranging from contemporary, to mid-century, to a traditional motif. It is also great for a large entryway with a large flower arrangement or sculpture on top.
Q: Are you able to offer customized versions?
A: Yes. The base can be used as a side table. It can have a lazy Susan in the middle. It can be made in any size and specification. It is versatile because the top can be made in any wood finish from the collection, and the base can be in any metal finish from the collection that coordinates with the top.
