Behind the Design

Studio Visit: Costantini Design

In our latest Studio Visit feature, wife-and-husband team Bárbara Ruckert and William Stuart, the designers behind Costantini Design, talk about the inspiration behind their Patone Sofa, which features exotic wood and a shelving unit.

Q: What inspired you to design the Patone Sofa?

A: We designed the Patone for our living room. We wanted an inviting and comfortable sofa that would feel like part of the architecture. Clean lines, composition and comfort were the defining goals of the piece.

Q: Did you see a void in the marketplace, or did you design it for a particular project and then realize that it had broader appeal?

A: (Bárbara) I don’t usually look at the market. I think of pieces or dream of pieces and then materialize them. Of course these dreams are influenced by the things we see but I look at a lot of art as opposed to furniture showrooms. Donald Judd for example was a great influence on me for this piece.

Q: What is your favorite feature or detail of the item? What makes it so special?

A: The name Patone comes from a made-up Spanish word that would roughly translate to “big foot." The feet have a very low profile but in fact are very wide. The profile of the entire piece is scaled to that low and wide, sleek shape and allows you to approach it from any angle. You can just as easily sit on the arm or the back as you would the seat. And we left those wood parts open like shelving to be visually light and also to invite owners to add their own signature.

Q: The sofa really makes a statement, so ideally, how and where would you like to see it used?

A: Anywhere you would like people to relax and lounge, especially in a room where the back is exposed. Dropbox recently purchased nearly 30 of these for their gorgeous new headquarters which was very flattering.

Q: How does it coordinate with other items in your collection?

A: We try to make beautiful objects that are functional. In that sense it goes with everything we make but for our home we paired this with our Argilla Table, some Bruno Chairs, a Luca Chair, and some custom club chairs we made for the space that we are still fine-tuning before we add them to our collection. All of them have a low profile.

Q: Are you able to offer customized versions?

A: Yes, it is hand-crafted from solid wood so no two pieces are exactly alike. While it was perfect for our space the way we made it, we want to make it perfect for yours.
