Behind the Design

Want Casual, California Luxury? Your First Stop is McGuire

For over 60 years, McGuire Furniture has been giving homes a casual California comfort with its trademark furnishings, and it all started with rattan.

It was in 1948 that founder John McGuire happened upon a showroom's inventory of unsold rattan sofas and chairs. Realizing that all the pieces needed was a cushion, he turned to a friend whose father owned a mattress company to create this essential missing component. McGuire's intuition was quickly proved correct and soon all the previously unsold furniture was gone. Having found his passion, McGuire quit his day job and continued down this newfound path.

Given its founding, it comes as no surprise that natural materials are at the core of McGuire, serving as the backbone of company's furnishings and its approach to design. After rattan, the company experimented with rawhide, creating a patented binding technique in the process, and now the list is endless with teak, walnut, cement, leather, crystal, marble, Danish cord, brass, and bronze appearing in McGuire's pieces.

However, it's not just the use of one particular material but the imaginative mixing of several that is a hallmark of McGuire's designs and a driving force behind its creative process. Shiny metals are wrapped with soft leathers and smooth woods are embraced by rattan to create heritage pieces that tell a story.

The focus on natural materials also embodies the casual, comfortable living that McGuire's pieces are made for. Influenced by the indoor-outdoor lifestyle of San Francisco, where the company is based, McGuire's furniture celebrates good living without pretension.

As McGuire Furniture continues to design its trademark casual pieces, we can expect it will continue to celebrate the luxurious yet low-key lifestyle with natural materials, lighter finishes, and warmer metals. Of course, we can also expect more traditional designs as McGuire travels back in time to its founding to bring us some of its classic pieces updated for modern living.
