Dream Date: Shopping with Kelly Wearstler

Between her thriving fashion and home empires and roster of celebrity clients, designer Kelly Wearstler isn’t blessed with a lot of downtime—but the dynamo does still manage to prioritize the important things (read: shopping).

“I always try to get it done before LA traffic gets too insane,” Wearstler explains of her efficient approach. The tastemaker kindly agreed to give Domaine’s Mat Sanders a tour of her favorite neighborhood haunts, and like the best shopping companions, graciously gave us first dibs on her favorite picks, along with volunteering her expert opinion on why each of the below picks is splurge-worthy.

Our day began, of course, in Wearstler’s flagship lifestyle boutique, which is stocked with her own collections, vintage books, and jewelry, and a curated assortment of brands and artists that she’s discovered in her travels. “The floor is ever-evolving and in constant flux,” she says.

1. This dish is the perfect catch-all. It’s a great accent for a desk or vanity. I use it to store loose jewelry and keys. The nude engraving is inspired by classical silhouettes. I love the flair and curvature of the artwork. Diva Dish, $850.

2. Every bauble box I design is one of a kind. I hand-pick each stone and setting. I’m constantly searching the world for just the right stones. They each have a distinctive voice and make an amazing, unique keepsake. Memphis Bauble Box, $2275.

3. This is one of my favorite hostess gifts. It adds drama and instantly elevates any tablescape. I recently hosted an event where we lined up several bottles of wine all with different bottle stops. It’s a chic and functional party accessory. Mobel Bottle Stopper, $195.

Next up was high-concept luxury store-meets-art gallery Just One Eye, a space steeped in LA lore, thanks to the fact that it once served as the business headquarters for Howard Hughes. “The shopping experience here is second to none,” says Wearstler. “They have so many genres and styles under one roof—from the latest contemporary ready-to-wear, to vintage handbags and cool art. I love getting lost in here. There’s so much to see.”

1. This bag is incredible—I love the layered textural shape—and I have a deep abiding love for all things metal. Metallic accessories add a bit of rock ‘n’ roll tough that will easily edge up any outfit. Gold Metal Disk Bag, $5350

2. I collect vintage books, and am always so excited to find incredible out-of-print fashion, architecture, and design titles. I’m especially inspired by punk art and culture. I always try to have a bit of raw with the refined. Punk Book, $600

3. This vintage ring is sexy and delicate. I love the ruby head and unexpected shape—it feels bizarre and special. I always layer vintage jewelry with pieces from my own collection: The more layers the better! Snake Ring, $3850

To conclude our tour, we capped things off at the showroom of illustrious antiquarian Joel Chen: “This is a go-to for me,” says Wearstler. “The inventory is extensive and always fresh. I frequently take clients here to hunt for special pieces and it never disappoints.”

1. This incredible chair has an impeccable design that would work well in smaller spaces. The floating design makes it feel open and less heavy. Fabio Lenci Chair, price upon request.

2. I love the organic curves and strong texture of this work. It feels equally feminine and masculine, and would be great in any number of spaces. JoAnn Patterson Sculpture, price upon request.

3. This light is ideal for highlighting a textured or patterned ceiling. I love the idea of up-lighting that also highlights the depth and nuances of a room. Metal 3-Light Ceiling Fixture, price upon request.
