Why Natural Fiber Rugs Always Work

As our photo archive of beautiful interiors continues to grow, we can't help but notice the staying power of various interior design trends. (Here's looking at you, subway tiles, gallery walls, and bar carts.) The latest addition to that formative list? Natural fiber rugs. This week, a completely unofficial poll in the Lonny office revealed the majority of us not only support these neutral wonders, but also own and decorate with them in our own homes. They're durable, effortless, perfect for layering, and, style-wise, guaranteed to stand the test of time. Whether you prefer softer jute, made from the stalk of the South Asian plant of the same name, or nubby sisal, which originates as the leaves of the Mexican agave plant, there's no denying these floor coverings' universal appeal. Keep scrolling for some of our favorite expert applications.

Unlike so many other style- or room-specific accents, these guys feel equally at home in a traditional sitting room (above left) or a hip living room outfitted with contemporary art and modern furniture (above right).

Better yet, natural fiber rugs play well with color, as evident in Emily Meyer's bright yellow sunroom, above.

Susan Greenleaf's trad-with-a-twist orange-and-blue dining room (above left) also show how well natural fibers pair with color. The same goes for pattern. Designer Dan Mazzarini (above right) opted for a bordered jute to act as a backdrop of sorts to the bevy of pattern and print happening in this living space.

And then, of course, there's fashion designer Peter Som's enviable New York City apartment, where a sisal rug creates a rustic backdrop for urbane furnishings and textile accents. If it's good enough for him, it's definitely good enough for us.
