Finder's Keepers

Some antiques dealers buy special furnishings for their personal use at home and later sell them. Not Bill Gardner, who owns W. Gardner, Ltd., an emporium of fine imported antiques in Houston.

For him, the antiques that fill his home are like old friends. He hangs on to them. He cherishes their unique qualities. He enjoys sharing stories about them.

Take his Syrie Maugham sofa, an elegant collectible by the acclaimed British interior designer of the 1920s and 1930s. “I’ve had that sofa in the living rooms of my homes for forty-some-odd years,” Gardner says. “When I moved in here, I replaced it with a pair of antique Italian settees.” Did Gardner get rid of his classic London sofa? “It got banished to the master bedroom,” he says, whereupon he begins an inspiring story about Maugham’s life as a designer.
