Texas Artisans: Ceramics

A great part about moving to Texas has been finding an entirely new set of local artisans and artists that I can source from. Two Texan companies doing beautiful things with ceramics are Paul Schneider Ceramics and Waylande Gregory Studios.

Paul Schneider, who’s based in Dallas, makes stunning lamps, vases and bowls. He learned to throw when he was in high school here in Dallas, just a few miles from S.B. Long headquarters. I like his use of bold colors and geometric patterns. You can see some great examples in this recent Architectural Digest Feature.

Another recent discovery is ceramics from Waylande Gregory Studios. Waylande Gregory was a prolific art-deco ceramics sculptor popular in the early 20th century. In a Hollywood plot twist, an all-but-forgotten collection of his work was found in the basement of the Gregory Estates Philanthropic Foundation in 2009. Gregory’s great-grand nephew helped start Waylande Gregory Studios, based in Houston, producing reproductions of Waylande Gregory’s original bowls, trays, and other ceramics. The pieces are iconic, graphic, and very chic.
