In 2013, Steinway & Sons commissioned Frank Pollaro to make their 4th commemorative piano. It is the 600,000th piano that Steinway has produced. In thinking about the 600,000th piano, Pollaro was immediately drawn to the Fibonacci number, which visually constructs a spiral resembling the number 6, Pollaro thought.
The piano was finally completed in 2015. It was constructed out of six individually selected logs of Macassar Ebony. The logs were selected for their unique and complimentary colors and grains. The piano took over 6,000 man-hours to create, with all of the detailed inlay work that was required. It was purchase for $2.4 million, the highest price ever for a Steinway piano.119
