Delhi Mercury Ball Chandelier
A Lutyens Furniture & Lighting Product
This chandelier was designed by Edwin Lutyens for New Delhi in about 1930. It was, in its day, truly inspired and one of the first “modern electroliers”. Its unique appearance is entirely dependent on the four “shaver lights” that frame the ball and, in recent years, we have faced very real and relevant concerns that both they, and hence the light, would become obsolete.
In fact the bulbs are now extremely difficult to find in the US although still easy to get hold of in Europe. And so, in the interests of keeping the fitting alive, we have developed a solution that involves custom-made LED bulbs.
The LED driver is housed in the ceiling canopy. And, for those of you that prefer to remain firmly rooted in the 20th Century, we have developed a system that will allow for our US customers to buy European bulbs in bulk with a transformer similarly housed in the canopy. Also, henceforth, all Deli Mercury Ball lights fitted with conventional bulbs will be forward compatible for a switch to LED should this become wanted or necessary.
The light illustrated was commissioned with a bronze finish. Lutyens’s own was painted. Both finish options and several paint colours are available.
Note that the light illustrated has a rope and tassel combination as Lutyens would have intended. These are hand made to order and may be customised for length and colour.
