Pure hand-knotted wool using only natural vegetal dyes.
From the Orley Shabahang “Animal Collection,” Duality is inspired by the inner struggle between the two sides of the human condition – the spiritual and the physical. The two headed lion symbolizes this struggle.
Like all Orley Shabahang carpets, each version of this piece is a one-of-a-kind creation made entirely by hand using only natural and organic raw materials.
The wool is only from our own herds of Persian Fat-Tailed Sheep that have been bred for centuries specifically for carpetmaking, and are prized for their lanolin-rich wool. That wool is then hand-spun using traditional hand-spinning techniques to create a yarn that possesses extraordinary strength and takes dyes in interesting, asymmetric ways. The dyes that are used are created from ancient recipes using only organic vegetal materials such as indigo, pomegranate rinds, and walnut shells.
The next part of production takes advantage of all of the powers of nature. The dyed wool is baked in the sun to truly set the patina of the color. Additionally this aspect of the process allows the wool to reach its final color, and thus the final carpet is never in danger of fading. That dyed wool is then run through clean, natural river water. This highlights the truly organic nature of our carpetmaking process, because the river water is so pure that it won’t negatively affect the dyed wool and the all-natural vegetal dyes don’t pollute the water.
To create the beautiful finished carpets, the wool is hand-knotted by artisans who have passed the weaving traditions down from generation to generation. We allow these artists to weave at looms built right in their homes, as we do not believe in displacing our weavers. Though we may develop our own designs, they are the ones that truly bring our artwork to life and help us create the antiques of the future.
