Edgbaston
Edgbaston has a reputation for being one of the most upmarket and affluent parts of Birmingham.
In the 19th century, the area was under the control of the Gough-Calthorpe family who refused to allow factories to be built in Edgbaston, thus making it attractive for the middle class.
Edgbaston means ‘village of a man called Ecgbald’, which is an Old English name meaning ‘bold edge’.
