Educational Poster of Cats, Edouard Henry-Baudot,
Back Row Home
An educational poster of cats by French post-impressionist painter and engraver Edouard Henry-Baudot. In addition to large bucolic-inspired symbolist canvases, Art Nouveau nudes, rural scenes and animals, Baudot produced posters , illustrations for textbooks and postage stamps. Depicting a mother cat with her kittens in front of a smoky fireplace, this poster was printed and published by Éditions Delagrave, a French publishing house founded in 1865 by Charles Delagrave, that specializes in school and university books and printed teaching aids. Printed on slick paper and adhered to heavy paperboard, this dark image with marvelous detail has a mark just above the head of the kitten at the bowl, some scratches and scuffed areas overall, and some separation along the edges – all of which simply add to its look.
