George III Style Mahogany Sofa, England c.1875. This design of sofa originally appeared during the reign of George III in England (1760-1820) when its gently sloped back, rolled arms and open work leg structure was considered the height of modernity and dashing style. The clean architectural lines of the sofa was well suited to the new sparely furnished interiors designed by Robert Adam and William Chippendale. The open legs allowed light to flow into the entire room and the increase in available light was due to technological advances in building that allowed larger windows that used greater amounts of glass to be included in new structures. The simplicity of the form of this sofa has been heightened here by the use of a solid coloured blue velvet that appears to change colour depending upon the angle from which it is viewed. The dark mahogany on the legs of this sofa have been lightened to a beautiful pale colouration that draws attention to the subtle vertical grooves adjacent to each corner as well as the horizontal stretchers that connect the legs to provide structural integrity and support. Because the lines of the sofa are so well proportioned it is an ideal piece to float within a room or it may be used by placing it against a wall to provide an anchor for the entire interior arrangement.
