Carl Moore Antique’s Stock# EEJ160

A Regency period gold leaf circular frame enclosing the original convex mirror glass from England c.1830. Please look at the handsomely bold design of this round mirror and frame. The centre section of the frame is a raised half tube divided into four equal quadrants by a recurring pattern of three rings also raised in profile. On the exterior and interior of this large centre tubular section the frame is slightly receded with a double grooved design. This change in profile across the surface of the circular frame was chosen to enhance its dramatic impact when illuminated by firelight and candlelight while the bold design gave it a dramatic presence. The original convex mirror glass is surrounded by a circular band of ebonized wood (wood that has been lacquered black to simulate ebony) and this section also has a grooved surface with the grooves placed in a symmetrical and evenly spaced fashion. The use of a convex mirror glass spread rapidly during the Regency period and were first deployed in dining rooms where their unusual ability to reflect the entire room empowered the hostess to see when her guests had completed a course at the dinner table. Once she was assured that all were finished she was able to discreetly signal the staff and continue on to the next course. We have left the reflection of the photographer’s equipment in the picture and the narrow bands of light are the flourescent tubes where the picture was taken in order to help view the convex shape of the glass. Now mirrors like this are used in any room of a home whether it is decorated in a contemporary or traditional manner as the simple shape lends itself to many interpretations in decorating.
