Immense Spanish Carpet, 22’1” x 25’9”
A Spanish carpet, circa 1967/68, designed as a playful, repeating pattern of men in short pants and waistcoats , each with upraised arms, each seeming to balance a two tiered object on their heads, and all flanked by pairs of birds. In excellent condition. Made to the order of Clare Booth Luce for the living room of her home on the grounds of the Biltmore Hotel in Phoenix, Arizona. Mrs. Luce was an ambassador, author, playwright, politician, and the wife of Henry Luce, founder of Time Magazine. This rug was custom made to the order and specifications of Mrs. Luce.
