Italian 19th Century Grand Tour Marble Bust of Capitoline Venus After the Antique
This Grand Tour bust of the Capitoline Venus was carved after the Antique, the work is signed on the integral plinth V. Campidoglio and was executed during the second half of the 19th century. It is captures Aphrodite immediately before taking a bath, the original being a full length statue that depicts her standing beside towels and a basin of water. Carefully carved in a softly translucent Carrara marble that has aged nicely with a worn patina to the stone throughout, she glows beautifully in the right light. Her nose was damaged at one point and was restored several decades ago, the material having discolored against the stone. She rests on a steel pintle over what appears to be the original socle.
