Italian Carved Marble Lions, Circa 1900
A pair of Italian carved marble lions on pedestals, circa 1900, with a well-travelled history. Formerly the property of a wealthy East Javanese sugar baron who purchased them while on holiday in Italy, they eventually found their way to a Chinese antique dealer in Malang, Java. The imposing pair, seated with shields on stepped plinths, display the superb skill of the Italian craftsman who carved the tightly curled manes, expressive faces and musculature.
