Jacob Armstead Lawrence (American, 1917-2000) Lawyers and Clients, 1994, edition of 100 plus various proofs, printed by Lou Stovall, Workshop, Inc., Washington D.C. (Nesbett, L94-2). Signed and dated “Jacob Lawrence 1994” in pencil l.r., numbered “87/100” in pencil l.l., printer’s dry stamp l.l. Color screenprint on paper, image size 29 3/4 × 22 in. (75.5 × 55.7 cm) Condition: We took the piece to Zukor Art Conservation and had the print removed from frame and examined. All tape residue has been professionally removed. Small neutralized stain from tape is visible on back of print. Wonderful screen print- almost pristine condition. Has been sealed in a frame since purchase in the 90s. Jacob Lawrence was an African-American painter known for his portrayal of African-American life and is among the best-known 20th-century African-American painters. Lawrence’s works are in the permanent collections of numerous museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, the Phillips Collection, Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Reynolda House Museum of American Art. He is widely known for his modernist illustrations of everyday life as well as epic narratives of African American history and historical figures. This work is based on the 1993 painting by the same name in the collection of Baruch College, New York, and was published to raise funds for the National Bar Institute, Washington.
