Kate McCarthy, "Eight Years"
“Eight Years” is a soft sculpture piece by Kate McCarthy, 2017. Human comfort, nesting, and personal expression rely heavily on the use of fabric, design, and their intrinsic tactile qualities. With embroidery at the cornerstone, McCarthy uses stitching as a narrative tool throughout her body of work. Kate McCarthy’s sculptures and paintings are soft distortions of the everyday, bent through the lens of emotional memory. Through these translations, her art depicts an interplay of emotions, textures, colors and forms. By painting playful creatures, armchairs, and bathtubs, McCarthy gives the viewer a chance to see how our feelings might change the way we look at our everyday items. McCarthy’s solo shows include Penny Contemporary, 19 Karen Contemporary Artspace, and Matthew Rachman Gallery. McCarthy is the recipient of Arts Connect Grant from Arts Tasmania and Artsbridge, both in 2017. Kate McCarthy lives and works in Hobart on Tasmania’s East Coast.
