Vintage Lucite Empire Neoclassical Style Table, Gilt Bronze, France c.1960. This elegant dining table base was created entirely from transparent Lucite in the manner of an Empire period original. All four of the columns showcase bronze dore collars at the top and bottom that are finely detailed with a patterned surface. The gilded bronze captures and reflects light while the clear Lucite allows light to travel through unimpeded. The contrast between the two materials gives this table a special appearance. The two columns on either end stand upon a rectangular base and also have a vertical panel between them. The designer of this table base also chose a horizontal stretcher to be placed between the two vertical ends to provide structural stability as well as visual beauty. The Empire style, developed when Napoleon I was on the throne of France (1804-1815), was notable for its architectural references such as these fully round columns and plinth bases. The use of a gilded circular collar to add a reflective gleam is also specific to the Empire period. The glass top has a shaped edge that provides definition to the eye and of course its size may be changed for something larger if desired. We will be happy to help acquire a different top, please enquire with us. The striking contemporary quality of this table makes a superb design statement and it will be an unexpected addition to any room. The table would also make a most interesting writing table as chairs will pull up directly beneath the top.
